People use the pedestrian lane to cross the street as what the law implies. These white lines serve as a safety measure so that vehicles would slow down or stop once they see this lane with people crossing the street. These are wide, separated lines from one side of the road to the other.
Stop, Look and Listen! Yes, this is what a family of swans did before crossing the street. One of the adult swans leads the family in crossing the street and guess what? They walk right in the pedestrian lane just like what humans do. Even animals understand what the law states. I guess they learned it from seeing humans doing that. Their level of intelligence is unbelievable.
